| WHAT'S IT ALL
ABOUT?
Extending over three days each April,
Bob Barnard's Jazz Party seeks to recreate the spirit of the Gibson
Jazz Parties, held annually in Colorado in the 1970's and 1980's. Like
its U.S. model, Bob Barnard's Jazz Party provides the best in
Traditional and Mainstream Jazz, presented in surroundings that are
ideal for performers and patrons alike. Cabaret style seating at
tables surrounding the band-stand, ensures close interaction between
audience and musicians, catalysing the creation of hot, exciting Jazz,
with a spontaneity seldom heard in concert or studio performances. At
least 20 leading musicians are engaged, including at least two
exponents of each instrument. The musicians are deployed and
redeployed in a variety of different combinations, offering each
player the opportunity to be featured with a range of different
musicians. Successive sets are led by different players, and each has
several opportunities to be featured in an extended solo performance.
Traditionally, the Party concludes with an "all in" performance.
Bob Barnard OA,
one of Australia's most appreciated Jazz
exponents, and for many, the world's leading cornetist, is leader of
the Jazz Party, responsible for selection of musicians and
programming. Bob's mellow tone and lyrical style have been an integral
part of the Australian Jazz scene since the 1950's. More recently,
Bob's music has become known to the rest of the world where he is in
much demand and can be heard among the best musical company. On his
regular trips to North America, he has performed with the likes of Jim
Cullum, John Sheridan, Dan Barrett and Peanuts Hucko. For more
information about Bob Barnard Click on his
web-site.
Each year, Bob Barnard's Jazz Party
brings to Melbourne, an overseas musician who has not previously
played in Australia. The first year it was acoustic guitarist/
vocalist/ raconteur Marty Grosz, from New York who was
joined by fellow American Ralph Sutton, a frequent visitor. The
2000 Jazz Party introduced outstanding German stride pianist Bernd
Lhotsky, who was accompanied by fellow-countryman Christian
Hopkins doubling on piano and alto saxophone. In 2001 it was New
York trumpet player - Jon-Erik Kellso who joined the Party;
2002 saw Finland's Antti Sarpila as special guest; in 2003
it was PianoGuy from San Antonio- John Sheridan; in 2004 it was trombonist Bob Havens
and in 2005 it was clarinetist Evan Christopher and cornetist
Tom Pletcher. Dan Barrett was guest in 2006 (see
pictures below) and Canada's Jim Galloway attended in 2007. The inclusion
of overseas musicians, together with leading interstate performers,
ensures that the music is fresh and exciting.
